UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team swept Saginaw Valley in a doubleheader Saturday (April 23) on the road. GVSU improves to 26-13 on the season, 9-6 in the GLIAC. The Lakers have secured the series win and will look to complete the weekend series sweep against the Cardinals in a nine-inning game tomorrow at 1:05 PM.
Game one – W, 5-1
GVSU took game one behind
Collin Bradley's stellar start on the mound. Bradley earned his sixth win of the season (6-2) after tossing 5.1 innings allowing just one run off five hits, while striking out four.
Nick Shaw earned his league leading 10
th save of the year after recording the final five outs.
GVSU jumped out early in the first inning.
Spencer Nelson led off the game with a triple. Two batters later
Christian Faust drove him in with a single to left field. After four scoreless innings, the Lakers extended the lead in the sixth with a
Brendan Guciardo RBI double followed by a
Jake Rydquist single to score Guciardo. Saginaw Valley got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth. GVSU quickly responded in the seventh on a
Nathan Logan double and a
Justin Mansager single to make it 5-1.
Justin Mansager went 3-4 at the plate with a run scored and run batted in.
Christian Faust hit 2-3 with a run scored and run batted in, while
Brendan Guciardo batted 2-4 with a run scored and run batted in.
Spencer Nelson added two hits including a triple and a run scored and
Nathan Logan scored a run and batted in a run.
Game two – W, 9-3
The Lakers came out firing in game two by putting up a five spot in the opening inning.
Nathan Logan started the scoring with a 2-run double to right field that scored Nelson and Faust. Later in the inning
MacArthur Graybill drove in two runs on a single to right center to make it 4-0.
Jake Rydquist would score during the next at bat to make it 5-0 Lakers.
Saginaw Valley answered in the second inning with a 3-run inning. The Cardinals got on the board from a 2-run triple and then brought across a third run on a sacrifice fly. GVSU would take a four run lead in the third off a
Jake Rydquist 2-run home run to left center. The home run was Rydquist's first home run of the season.
Christian Faust would make it an 8-3 game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly that scored
Connor Schuman.
Justin Ratliff would add one more run in the ninth for the Lakers.
Mark Scannell got the start on the mound and earned the win (3-1) after tossing 6.0 innings allowing three runs off five hits, while striking out four Cardinal batters. Joe Huesing threw three scoreless innings of relief in the win allowing just two hits, while striking out three.
Connor Schuman went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored and
Spencer Nelson hit 2-4 with a walk and a run scored.
Nathan Logan added a 2-run double and scored twice, while
Jake Rydquist smashed a 2-run home run and a walk with two runs scored.
MacArthur Graybill hit 2-5 with two runs batted in.
