ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 24 Grand Valley State softball team swept a GLIAC doubleheader from the Davenport Panthers Wednesday (April 20) afternoon at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers won game one in five innings, 8-0, then stormed back for a 10-4 win in game two. The Lakers improve to 30-5 on the season and 15-3 in the conference with a trip to Ferris State on the horizon tomorrow (April 21) with first pitch at 3:30 PM.
The Lakers scored at least once in every inning in the run-rule game one victory.
Lydia Goble singled home
Joanna Cirrincione in the first inning to open up the scoring. The Lakers tacked on another in the second when
Megan Koenigshof singled through the left side to bring home a run. In the third, it was
Morgan Wagner singling through the infield to chase home
Taylor Rieger.
The Lakers broke it open with a four-run fourth. Cirrincione turned provider with a double off the fence in left-center to chase around
Kaitlin Lynch all the way from first. Goble then plated Cirrincione for the second time in the game with a ground ball single.
After an error brought home a third run,
Morgan Spicer singled to drive in another. With two outs and the bases empty in the fifth, an infield single by Lynch, compounded by a throwing error, put the winning run on third and Cirrincione promptly singled through the right side to push across the game-winner.
Hannah Beatus (W, 14-2) allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five. She allowed just one base runner to reach scoring position as she returned to dominating form.
After the Panthers scored twice in each of the first two innings to open game two, the Lakers rallied in the middle innings to storm back. They rallied for three runs in the fourth to tie the game, capped by an RBI single from Lynch.
They'd strike for four runs on four hits in the fifth, scoring all of the runs with two outs.
Bailey Thatcher fisted an 0-2 pitch into left to give the Lakers the lead, then Koenigshof and Lynch each drove in a run for some insurance.
Taylor Rieger clobbered a two-run homer in the sixth to straight-away center in the sixth, her third of the season, to put an exclamation point on the sweep.
Genesis Eggart (W, 9-1) pitched five scoreless innings of relief, scattering two hits and a pair of walks while striking out two.
