BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 24 Grand Valley State softball team swept a doubleheader at Ferris State Thursday (April 21) afternoon on the road to claim their sixth straight regular season series win over the Bulldogs. The Lakers won game one, 5-0, then rallied back for an 8-4 win in game two to improve to 32-5 on the year and 17-3 in GLIAC play. The Lakers return home for senior day Saturday (April 23) when they host Wayne State at 1 PM.
Hannah Beatus was again sensational in the opener, holding the Bulldogs to just two hits – both singles – while striking out 10 and walking six in a complete-game shutout win (15-2). She did not allow a hit until the fifth inning as she hurled her eighth complete-game shutout of the season.
The Lakers got her the lead in the fourth inning when
Hannah Hollister doubled to leftfield to bring home a pair. Hollister would later score on a sacrifice bunt from
Bailey Thatcher to add to the lead. The usual suspects struck for a run in the fifth when
Joanna Cirrincione doubled then immediately scored on a triple by
Lydia Goble.
Kelsey Komorous tacked on another run in the seventh with an RBI groundout.
A big sixth inning got the Lakers the lead in game two. Trailing, 2-1,
Bailey Thatcher doubled home the tying run then Megan Koengishof hit a grounder to second with the throw home too late to get Jaye Guichaalar at the plate for the lead. Then a two-run triple from Cirrincione and an RBI knock by Goble added to the lead. The Lakers tacked on another run in the seventh while Ferris State got two back in the home side, but the rally fell well short.
Genesis Eggart (W, 10-1) allowed four runs, including two in the seventh with the game well in hand, while allowing six hits, striking out four and walking four.
