The No. 11 Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team is on a 13 game winning streak after taking down the Davenport Panthers today in the second Crosstown Showdown of the season. GVSU's 18-11 victory over the Panthers keeps them in first place of the GLIAC with a 7-0 conference record and 15-1 overall record.
While the Panthers scored the first goal of the day, senior Sophie Conroy and junior Maggie Hammer responded with back-to-back goals to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Davenport netted another shortly after to tie it up at 2-2 and the Lakers closed the period with a 3-2 run to take the advantage 5-4 heading into the second. The Lakers and Panthers played an even second quarter with each team netting three goals a piece and the GVSU lead remaining at one at halftime (8-7).
The Lakers were able to pull away from the Panthers after a strong third quarter where GVSU was able to outscore DU 5-2. Three of the Lakers' five goals came from senior Olivia Esposito, who finished with her seventh hat trick of the season. Heading into the third quarter with a 13-9 advantage, junior Molly Bursinger netted the first goal of the fourth period and her fourth goal of the day. The Lakers would outscore the Panthers 5-2 again in the final quarter to take home an 18-11 win over DU.
Bursinger led the Lakers with five goals, two assists, and 11 draw controls. Esposito finished with four goals, followed by junior Kate DeYoung who netted three goals, Hammer and Conroy who tallied two goals each, and sophomore Maddy Champagne and Sydney Stone finished with one goal a piece. Sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maloney also finished the day with seven saves. GVSU outshot the Panthers 35-24 and won 22 draw controls compared to DU's 11.
The Lakers are back in action on Sunday, April 24 as they host Northern Michigan for Senior Day.
