DETROIT – The No. 25 Grand Valley State baseball team split today's doubleheader against Wayne State. The Lakers lost game one 4-1 and won game two 8-6. GVSU will look to even the four-game series tomorrow in a 9-inning game at 12:00 pm.
Game one – L, 4-1
Wayne State got on the board first from a leadoff home run in the second inning. GVSU tied the next in the next half inning when
Christian Faust singled to center field scoring
Spencer Nelson. Wayne State would take the lead again in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice with runners on first and third. The Warriors would tack on two more runs in the sixth on a 2-run triple.
Austin Brown got the start and was tagged with the loss (3-2) going 5.1 innings allowing four runs off six hits, while striking out four batters.
Logan Wynalda came in relief and struck out the only two batters he faced. Faust went 1-3 with an RBI, while
Cade Stanton batted 2-3 at the plate.
Game two – W, 8-6
GVSU brought three runs across the plate in the first inning. After
Spencer Nelson led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on an error,
Kyle Nott singled up the middle to open up the scoring. Next batter,
Christian Faust launched his fifth home run of the season over the right field wall. Wayne State answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame.
Both starting pitchers settled in after the first inning, tossing five scoreless innings as the Lakers remained down by two heading into the seventh. Nelson got the Lakers to within one with an RBI double down the left field line. Two batters later, Faust doubled off the left field wall that scored Nelson and Nott to give the Lakers a 6-5 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, Wayne State hit a solo home run to tie the game.
In the ninth inning with two outs and the bases loaded,
Cade Stanton singled through the right side to score Nott and Faust, giving the Lakers an 8-6 lead.
Nick Shaw came in and recorded the final three outs for the Lakers for his eighth save of the season.
Nick Rutkowski got the start on the mound tossing 6.2 innings allowing six tuns off seven hits, while striking out four.
Logan Wynalda earned the win (1-0) after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Christian Faust batted 3-4 at the plate with a home run, double, four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Kyle Nott hit 2-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Spencer Nelson added an RBI double and scored twice.
Cade Stanton hit the game winning 2-run single in the ninth.
