The No. 25 Grand Valley State baseball team dropped the opening game of their four-game series against Wayne State by a score of 10-8. The Lakers fall to 21-10, 4-3 in the GLIAC. GVSU will face Wayne State tomorrow for a doubleheader at 1:00 pm in Detroit.
It didn't take long for the Lakers to get on the board.
Spencer Nelson sent the first pitch of the game over the right center wall for his sixth of the season. Wayne State answered with a solo home run of their own to tie the game at one after the opening frame. Nelson gave the Laker lead right back on an RBI double down the right field line that scored
Jake Rydquist. The Warriors answered quickly in the bottom half of the frame with a leadoff home run that tied the game at three.
In the third inning, Wayne State took their first lead of the game off a 2-run home run. The Warriors would add to the lead in the fourth with an RBI single that made it 5-2, and an RBI double in the fifth that made in 6-2. The Lakers came right back by scoring four in the sixth to tie the game.
Spencer Nelson singled up the middle for his third RBI of the game. Next batter,
Kyle Nott launched a three-run shot for his first collegiate home run over the right field wall that tied the game. In the bottom half of the frame, Wayne State took back the lead with another leadoff home run. The Warriors added to more runs in the inning to take a 9-6 lead after six innings.
In the eighth, Wayne State lead off the inning with a home run to make it 10-6. With the Lakers trailing by four runs heading into the ninth,
Nathan Logan lead off the inning with a solo home run for his seventh of the season that got GVSU within three. The Lakers would make it 10-8 off a wild pitch with the bases loaded. The comeback fell just short as Wayne State would be able to hang on for the 10-8 win.
Spencer Nelson hit for the cycle going 4-5 at the plate with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
Kyle Nott went 3-6 with a home run, three RBI's and a run scored.
Brendan Guciardo batted 3-5 with two doubles, while
Nathan Logan added two hits with a run scored and RBI.
Jake Rydquist hit two doubles and scored a run for the Lakers.
Collin Bradley got the start on the mound for GVSU and was tagged with the loss (5-2) after tossing 5.0 innings allowing seven runs off seven hits, while striking out seven batters.
