Baseball sweeps doubleheader vs West Virginia Wesleyan

Improve to 5-1 on the season

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Grand Valley State baseball team swept West Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday (March 8) at Chain of Lakes stadium. GVSU won game one 10-0 and game two 17-4 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Game One: The Lakers jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Christian Faust tripled to right center scoring Spencer Nelson. Two batters later, Nathan Logan singled to score Faust. In the top of the second, Brendan Guciardo launched a 2-run home run over the left field wall to double the Laker lead. Later in the inning, Faust batted in two more runs with a single to make it a 6-0 advantage, followed by a Logan double to center field to make it a 7-0 game after two innings. Guciardo batted in his third RBI of the game in the top of the third to make it 8-0 in favor of the Lakers. In the top of the fifth, Justin Mansager hit a two-RBI single that would end up being the last scoring play of the game.

Colby Phipps got the start in game one and picked up the win improving to 2-0 on the season. Phipps went 5.0 scoreless innings pitched, allowing just three hits, while striking out three batters. Joe Huesing came in relief and recorded the final six outs. 

The Laker offense was lead by Nathan Logan who went 3-3 with a double and two runs batted in. Christian Faust went 2-3 with two runs scored and three RBI's. Spencer Nelson and Justin Mansager each recorded two hits, while Brendan Guciardo recorded three RBI's.

Game Two: West Virginia Wesleyan got on the board first in the top of the first inning on an RBI single up the middle. The Lakers answered quickly in the bottom of the first with a two-RBI single by Cade Stanton to give GVSU the 2-1 lead. Stanton would later score in the inning off an error to make it 3-1. The Lakers would make it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the second. The offense continued to add to the lead in the bottom of the third. Logan tripled to right center to score Faust, followed by a Kyle Nott sacrifice fly that made it a 6-1 lead. 

West Virginia Wesleyan responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-4 ballgame. GVSU answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to get the lead to six. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lakers poured across seven runs to put the game out of reach. Kyle Nott got the scoring started in the inning with a two-RBI single. Connor Schuman doubled down the left field line that brought home two runs. Later in the inning, Carter Rohman hit an RBI double for his third RBI of the game to make it 16-4. Rohman would later score off a wild pitch which would end up being the last run of the game. 

Rylan Peets got the start in game two and went 4.0 IP, allowing four runs (three earned) off four hits, while striking out three batters. Nathan Wargolet came in relief and got the win, improving to 1-0 on the season. Wargolet pitched two scoreless innings without giving up any hits and striking out two. 

Logan and Faust lead the Laker offense with three hits and three runs scored. Nott and Rohman lead the Lakers with three runs batted in, while Logan and Stanton each recorded two RBI's. Stanton and Rohman each recorded two hits.
