No. 10 Lakers Take Down McKendree Bearcats on the Road

GVSU advances to 3-1 on the season

The No. 10 Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team won their third road game of the season today with a 19-9 victory over McKendree University. The Lakers advanced to 3-1 on the year, with two more road games on the schedule before finally opening up at home on March 11. 

Just over a minute into the game, senior Olivia Esposito struck first for the Lakers with the Bearcats responding with a goal of their own shortly after. Junior Molly Bursinger scored her first goal of the game at the 11:19 mark with senior Sophia Conroy netting the next four goals for GVSU to give the Lakers a 6-3 edge heading into the second. 

The Bearcats scored first in the second period, with Bursinger scoring the next two goals for the Lakers and Esposito recording her second goal of the day. McKendree was able to send one home before the period ended, leaving GVSU with a 9-6 lead at halftime. The Lakers shut out the Bearcats in the third period, outscoring McKendree 5-0 with goals from Bursinger, Esposito, Maggie Hammer, and Kate DeYoung

Freshman Ashleigh Rothe scored her first goal as a Laker to start the fourth period, along with freshmen Zoe Ziegler and Ellie Bernard who scored their first goals of their careers to close out the game. 

Bursinger led the Lakers with six goals and eight draw controls, while forcing three turnovers. Conroy and Esposito netted four goals apiece, followed by Hammer, DeYoung, Rothe, Ziegler, and Bernard who each scored a goal for the Lakers. Sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maloney finished with five saves, followed by freshman goalkeeper Kaylyn Cater who recorded three saves. GVSU outshot the Bearcats 34-22 and caused 18 turnovers, while also snagging 20 ground balls.
