The #11 Grand Valleys State women's lacrosse team overmatched #24 Davenport Wednesday night (March 30) at the GVSU Lacrosse field by a 19-3 margin. The Lakers improve to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in GLIAC action, while Davenport falls to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in league play. GVSU will hit the road for a GLIAC contest at Northern Michigan (8-2, 2-1 GLIAC) Friday (April 1).
Grand Valley State started fast and never looked back, leading the entire contest.
Maddy Champagne put up the first goal at the 11:05 mark of the first quarter and the route was on. Freshman
Ashleigh Rothe hit the back of the net at the 8:19 mark with Champagne recording the helper and
Molly Bursinger upped the lead to 3-0 less than minute later with an unassisted goal. Davenport got on the board in the first period, but did not score again until the 10:00 mark of the fourth quarter. GVSU tallied 12 unanswered goals en route to building a 15-1 lead. GVSU led 5-1 after one quarter of action and 11-1 at the half when a running clock was activated for the remainder of the game. The Lakers led 15-1 after three periods and closed the game with four consecutive goals for the final margin of 19-3.
Sophie Conroy led the offense with six goals and two assists, with five of those goals coming in the second half. Conroy scored three consecutive during a five minute stretch in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Ashleigh Rothe and
Olivia Esposito each tallied three goals, while Champagne and
Kate DeYoung each chipped in a pair. Bursinger,
Sydney Stone and
Hailey Crittenden hit the back of the net once.
Maggie Hammer tallied three helpers, while Bursinger and Conroy tallied a pair each.
Audrey Maloney picked up the win in net with three saves, while
Kaylyn Cater tallied a save in the fourth periord.
Grand Valley State dominated in every statistical category, including a 19-5 advantage in draw controls and a 29-13 advantage in shots.
