The No. 10 GVSU women's lacrosse team defeated the Upper Iowa Peacocks in their first ever match up today in a 24-0 GLIAC win. With today's eighth consecutive win, the Lakers advance to 10-1 on the season with a 2-0 start in conference play.
The Lakers scored a season-high 43 points today, the second most in program history behind the 44 point performance scored against Findlay in 2014. The Lakers also scored 24 goals in today's win, while dishing out the second most assists in program history with 19 assists on the day. GVSU's shut out today was the first shutout since 2015 when the Lakers defeated Alderson-Broaddus 17-0.
The Lakers won 19 draw controls with 29 of their 35 shots on goal. GVSU was led by freshman Ellie Bernard who finished with a career high four goals, followed by junior Kate DeYoung, sophomore Hailey Crittenden, and freshman Zoe Ziegler who each scored a hat trick.
Junior Maggie Hammer netted two goals and junior Molly Bursinger netted one, while each dished out two assists and won four controls. Seniors Olivia Esposito and Hannah Moore, along with freshman Ashleigh Rothe, scored two goals apiece, followed by senior Sophie Conroy and sophomore Maddy Champagne who each netted a goal for the Lakers.
The Lakers are back in action against local conference opponent Davenport on Wednesday, March 30, at home at 6:00 p.m.
