The No. 10 Grand Valley State Lakers extended their winning streak to seven straight victories as they defeated Concordia St. Paul 14-5 in the conference opener today. GVSU advances to 9-1 on the season and starts GLIAC play 1-0.
GVSU took the lead right away with junior midfielder Molly Bursinger netting four of the first six goals of the day. The Lakers led 6-1 heading into the second quarter with freshman Ashleigh Rothe scoring the first goal for GVSU in the second, followed by two goals a piece from junior Kate DeYoung and senior Sophie Conroy.
Going into the third quarter, the Lakers led 11-4 and defensively were able to shut out the Golden Bears for the entire period. GVSU only gave up one goal in the final period of the day with six netted goals of their own in the second half, taking home their first conference win of the year 17-5.
Bursinger led the Lakers with five goals, seven draw controls, two assists, and two ground balls. Conroy, A. Rothe, and DeYoung each scored a hat trick, followed by sophomore Maddy Champagne with two goals and freshman Zoe Ziegler with one goal on the day. Junior Maggie Hammer, Conroy, and Bursinger each dished out two assists a piece and sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maloney led the Lakers with four saves. The Lakers won 18 of the 25 draw controls and out shot the Golden Bears 37-17 with 23 of the Lakers' shots on goal.
The Lakers are back in action on Sunday, March 27 at noon to face conference opponent Upper Iowa for the first time in program history.
