Grand Valley State Baseball Sweeps Ohio Dominican In Friday Doubleheader

SS Christian Faust drives in nine runs in two game

Grand Valley State swept a non-league twin bill Friday (Mar. 25) afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. GVSU claimed a 9-3 win in game one, followed by a 12-4 win in game two. GVSU improves to 15-7 on the year, while ODU falls to 8-14. The Lakers will open GLIAC action next weekend in the first home action of the year versus Purdue Northwest.
 
Game 1
 
After a scoreless first inning, 1B Nate Logan singled to open the second inning and advanced to second on a single off the bat of RB Justin Mansager. DH Carter Smith hit a sac fly to advance Logan and Mansager. 3B Connor Schuman drove in Logan with a sac fly to center and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. GVSU added four in the top of the third when SS Christian Faust drove a bases loaded double to right center and later scored on a single off the bat of Carter Smith. Ohio Dominican plated three runs in the bottom of the third to pull within two (5-3), however the Lakers plated two in the fifth and put the game out of reach with two more in the sixth. Smith drove in runs in the fifth and sixth, while Faust added an RBI in the sixth. 
 
Austin Brown went the distance and improved to 3-0 on the year. Brown allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits with eight strikeouts. Faust was 2-for-4 with four RBI, while CF Spencer Nelson was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Justin Mansager was 3-for-4. Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI. 
 
Game 2
 
LF Kyle Nott singled with one out and moved to second on a single by Faust. A double steal put runners in scoring position and Logan followed with a two-run single to give GVSU a 2-0 lead. Faust plated Justin Ratliff in the top of the second with a sac fly. Ratliff singled with one out, advanced to second on a passed ball and third on sac fly before coming home on the Faust RBI to up the Laker lead to 3-1. Faust drove in two more with a home run to left that scored Nott who singled earlier in the inning. Catcher Brendan Guciardo drove in a run with a double and Nott scored in the sixth to give GVSU a 7-3 advantage. Faust picked up his ninth RBI on the day with single and C Zach Collins closed out the scoring with a 3-run homer to left. 
 
Four Laker pitchers combined for the win. Nick Rutkowski started and yielded three runs in four innings. Collin Bradley picked up the win in relief, striking out four and allowing just two hits in three innings of work. Ben Thomas pitched one inning and Nick Shaw struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth. 
 
Faust was 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored, while Nott was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Carter Smith and Justin Ratliff each collected three hits, while Jake Rydquist and Guciardo each tallied a pair of hits. Guciardo drove in three with his HR and Logan tallied a pair of RBI. 
 
Carter Smith was 5-for-7 with four RBI on the day, while Faust was 5-for-8 with nine RBI and five runs scored.
