No. 23 GVSU baseball sweeps Lewis Tuesday

Walk off game one 6-5 in 8-innings, win game two 10-6

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 23 Grand Valley State baseball team swept Lewis in two 7-inning games today (April 5) at the GVSU baseball field. GVSU won game one in extra innings on a walk off single, and won game two 10-6.
 
Game One – W, 6-5 (8-innings)
 
Lewis jumped out to a 3-0 lead off a 2-run home run in the third and a Laker error in the fourth. GVSU would get on the board in the fifth from a solo home run by Brendan Guciardo. In the sixth inning, the Lakers scored four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Spencer Nelson tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right center field, scoring Carter Smith. Next batter, Kyle Nott ripped a triple to left center that scored Justin Ratliff and Carter Rohman.
 
Lewis would end up tying the game in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Nick Shaw retired the Flyers in order. In the bottom half with runners on first and second, Kyle Nott walked it off for the Lakers with an RBI single to left field to score Connor Schuman.
 
Nick Shaw (1-1) got the win for the Lakers tossing the last two innings. Nathan Wargolet pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing no runs on two, while striking out four Lewis batters. Offensively, the Lakers were led by Nott 2-5 at the plate with a triple and three RBI's. Christian Faust went 3-4 and Justin Mansager went 2-4 with a run scored. 
 
Game Two – W, 10-6
 
Lewis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Flyers scored two off a Laker error, followed by a single down the right field line. GVSU would get on the board off a Lewis error in the second inning to trail by just two runs. In the third, Lewis added two more runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to make it 5-1. GVSU would quickly answer in the bottom half of the third with a four-run inning to notch the game at five. Connor Schuman go the scoring started in the inning with a 2-RBI single through the right side, scoring Mansager and Faust. Guciardo recorded his second RBI of the day to score Smith and Rohman tied the game with a single to center field.
 
Lewis quickly regained the lead in the fourth inning off a fielder's choice. In the sixth inning, GVSU poured five runs across to take a 10-6 lead all with two outs in the inning. Mansager tied the game with an RBI single to center field. Next batter, Carter Smith singled down the left field line that scored Cade Stanton and Mansager. After a Schuman single, Smith scored off a Lewis error. Guciardo would then single for his third RBI of the day, scoring Schuman. 
 
Lewis got the bases loaded with one out in the bottom half of the seventh, but Nick Shaw came in and recorded the final two outs and got his fourth save of the season.
 
Collin Bradley (5-1) got the win after pitching two shutout innings in relief. Bradley gave up just two hits and struck out two Lewis batters. Carter Smith led the Laker offense by going 2-3 at the plate with three runs scored and two RBI's. Connor Schuman batted 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI's, while Christian Faust went 2-3 with a run scored. Brendan Guciardo hit 2-3 with two RBI's and Justin Mansager scored twice and batted in one run.
