The Grand Valley State women's basketball team fell to Glenville State tonight in a 77-53 defeat in the NCAA DII Elite Eight Semifinals. With this seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance, the 31-3 Lakers finish the season with the second most wins in program history and the second highest winning percentage in program history (.912). This was also the third Final Four appearance in program history.
The Lakers had a strong defensive first half, heading into halftime with a two point advantage and holding the number one scoring offense in the country to just 27 points in the first half. The Glenville Pioneers came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and outscored Lakers 50-24 in the final two quarters. The Lakers were led by freshman Ellie Droste, who finished with 14 points, followed by senior Emily Spitzley with 13 points. Sophomore Courtney Sharland led the Lakers with nine rebounds and freshman Hadley Miller grabbed seven boards and chipped in six points. The Lakers graduate Samantha Gerhls and Qay Stanton, two players who have been extremely impactful in the success and culture of the program.
