2022 GLIAC Tournament Information
The No. 2 Grand Valley State women's basketball team took down the Northern Michigan Wildcats tonight in a 71-52 victory at home. The Lakers advance to 26-1 on the season in their 21st consecutive win tonight and advance to the GLIAC Semifinals on Saturday, March 5. GVSU will host the Michigan Tech Huskies at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with the Wayne State and Ferris State matchup following the GVSU-MTU game.
The Lakers trailed 5-0 to start the first quarter until senior Qay Stanton put Grand Valley State on the board. Northern Michigan had an 11-6 advantage with 2:30 left in the first until GVSU closed out the quarter with a 5-0 run of their own. Heading into the second quarter tied at 11-11, the Lakers extended their run to 10-0 and took the lead 16-11 in the first minute of the quarter. Junior Hannah Kulas scored seven points for the Lakers in the second quarter, followed by sophomore Hadley Miller and Qay Stanton also chipped in five points a piece.
GVSU went into the second half with just a five point lead (30-25) and while the Wildcats were able to bring it within three, that is the closest they would get to catching the Lakers. The Lakers were able to extend the lead to 12 at the 2:20 mark and outscored NMU 20-17 in the third, closing out the quarter with a 50-42 advantage. Another three pointer from Hannah Kulas and two consecutive baskets from sophomore Courtney Sharland gave the Lakers a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter. Shooting 67%, the Lakers extended the lead to 24 points and while the Wildcats tried to battle back, their late efforts fell short. GVSU finished with a 19-point victory over NMU to advance to the GLIAC Semifinals.
GVSU scored a monstrous 42 points in the paint, with 26 points also coming off of the bench, and won the glass 34-26. The Lakers were led tonight by junior Hannah Kulas who finished with 16 points, shooting 5-6 from behind the arc. Freshman Joslyn Brennan scored 13 points for the Lakers, followed by Courtney Sharland who finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
