Baseball defeats Wayne State Tuesday morning

Concluded spring break in Florida with 7-4 win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Grand Valley State baseball team concluded their spring break trip in Florida by defeating GLIAC foe Wayne State, 7-4 in a non-conference game in Auburndale, Florida. GVSU improved to 10-5 on the season and will face McKendree in a four game weekend series this Saturday (March 19)  and Sunday (March 20).
 
The Lakers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Christian Faust singled through the left side that scored Spencer Nelson. Wayne State had a quick answer in the top of the second, tying the game at one off an RBI single through the right side. In the top of the fourth, Wayne State took a 2-1 lead off a triple to right center. The Warriors added to their lead in the top of the seventh off a two run home run that made it 4-1. 
 
The Lakers rallied in the bottom of the seventh, taking the lead after pushing across four runs. GVSU made it 4-2 off a Wayne State error. Two batters later, Kyle Nott singled up the middle, scoring Jonas Gulbrandsen to make it 4-3. GVSU tied the game when Christian Faust bunted home Nelson. The Lakers would take the lead off a double steal when the catcher made a throwing error at second base, allowing Nott to score. The Lakers would add two insurance runs when Nott doubled down the left field line, scoring Brendan Guciardo and Spencer Nelson.
 
Nick Shaw recorded the final four outs for the Lakers to secure the victory, earning his second save of the year. Mark Scannell got the start on the mound. Scannell pitched a no decision after going 6.2 innings allowing four runs off seven hits, while striking out three batters. Ben Thomas earned the win (2-0) tossing one inning of relief allowing no runs off two hits and striking out one Warrior batter.
 
The Laker offense was led by Christian Faust who went 3-5 on the day with two RBI's. Spencer Nelson batted 2-4 with a double and three runs scored, while Kyle Nott went 2-4 with a double, one run scored, and three runs batted in. Connor Schuman and Brendan Guciardo each added a hit.
