AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Grand Valley State baseball team played two 9-inning games Monday (March 14) at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale, Florida. The Lakers defeated Northern State 2-0 in game one and lost 1-0 to Embry-Riddle in game two.
Game One vs Northern State – W, 2-0
Both teams went scoreless in the first three innings.
Rylan Peets got the start for the Lakers and struck out three batters in the first three innings. The Lakers got on the board in the fourth inning, where they scored both of their runs.
Kyle Nott started the inning with a leadoff walk followed by a
Christian Faust single through the right side to make it first and second with no outs. The next batter,
Nathan Logan doubled to left field to score Nott giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Justin Ratliff grounded out to second base was able to score Faust to give GVSU the 2-0 lead.
Two runs was enough for Peets as he pitched a complete game shutout allowing seven hits, one walk and striking out five batters. Peets improved to 1-0 on the season with the win.
Brendan Guciardo went 2-3 with a walk, while
Nathan Logan and
Christian Faust each went 2-4.
Spencer Nelson also added a hit for GVSU.
Game Two vs Embry-Riddle – L, 1-0
Embry-Riddle jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off two doubles with two outs.
The Laker offense produced seven hits.
Kyle Nott went 2-3 with a walk, while
Connor Schuman went 2-4.
Spencer Nelson,
Christian Faust and
Justin Mansager each recorded a hit.
Nick Rutkowski started on the mound for the Lakers and was tagged with the loss. Rutkowski threw a complete game allowing just one run off five hits and one walk, while striking out five batters.
The Lakers will conclude their spring break trip in the sunshine state tomorrow morning against conference foe Wayne State at 10 am at Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale, Florida.
