LEESBURG, Fla. – The Grand Valley State baseball team split with Wayne State College in a doubleheader Sunday (March 13) at Pat Thomas Field in Leesburg, Florida. The Lakers won game one, 2-0, while Wayne State College won game two 5-2. The Lakers are slated to play two 9-inning games tomorrow (March 14) at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.
Game One - W, 2-0
GVSU got on the board early in the top of the first.
Kyle Nott singled to left field and the very next batter,
Christian Faust hit a double to right center that scored Nott. There wouldn't be any scoring until the seventh inning when the Lakers got an insurance run off a Wayne State College error.
Austin Brown started on the mound and threw a complete game 2-hit shutout. Brown struck out eight batters and moves to 1-0 on the season.
Christian Faust recorded the only RBI for the Lakers going 1-3 with a double.
Kyle Nott and
Nathan Logan each went 1-3, while
Justin Ratliff and
MacArthur Graybill also added a hit each.
Game Two – L, 5-2
Wayne State College jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Lakers would get on the board in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Wayne State College re-gained their three run lead off an RBI double to right field. GVSU quickly responded with a run in the bottom half of the sixth off a
Jonas Gulbrandsen sacrifice fly out to center field. Wayne State College would another answer of their own in the top of the seventh with a two out single to center field.
Colby Phipps (2-1) was tagged with the loss, while
Nathan Wargolet and
Logan Wynalda pitched the final 4.0 innings in relief.
Christian Faust went 1-2 with a run scored and two walks.
Spencer Nelson went 1-4 with a triple, while
Kyle Nott and
Nathan Logan each added a hit.
