No. 5 GVSU Women’s Basketball Hosts Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech

Sawyers Day is Saturday, Feb. 12 against MTU

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team is not only sitting in the driver seat of the GLIAC with a 12-1 conference record, but were voted No. 5 in the nation in this week's polls. The 19-1 Lakers will matchup with Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech for the second time this season as the Lakers host NMU on Thursday, Feb. 10 and MTU on Saturday, Feb. 12. 

Senior Emily Spitzley, sophomore Rylie Bisballe, and sophomore Ellie Droste are all averaging double-digit scoring for the Lakers this season. Spitzley is leading the way for GVSU, averaging 13.2 points per game and connecting 43 three-pointers on 106 attempts (40.6%) this season. Bisballe is averaging 12.3 points per game and is the leading rebounder, grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game. Droste is averaging 11.6 points per game and is third in the GLIAC in three point percentage (45.2%). Senior Qay Stanton is also leading the team in assists, dishing out 67 assists for the Lakers this year. 

GVSU is coming off of its second win over Ferris State this season as the Lakers took down the Bulldogs on the road in a 75-68 victory. The Lakers were led by Emily Spitzley, who shot 50% on the day and finished with 18 points, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Rylie Bisballe scored 15 points, while grabbing five rebounds and three steals. Hannah Kulas came off of the bench and finished with 11 points and three boards, followed by Ellie Droste who finished with eight points and dished out a career-high seven assists. 

The Lakers traveled up to the U.P. in mid-January to face the Wildcats and Huskies for the first time this season. GVSU defeated the Huskies after Emily Spitzley hit the three point basket to send it into overtime. The Lakers defeated Michigan Tech 74-70 in OT and were led by Ellie Droste that night, who finished with a career-high 31 points. Two days later, GVSU traveled to Marquette, Mich. and defeated the Wildcats 61-48. Sophomore Rylie Bisballe led the Lakers with 20 points and seven rebounds.

The Northern Michigan Wildcats are currently sitting in ninth in GLIAC with a 3-9 conference record. After falling 53-52 to Purdue Northwest and 73-52 to Parkside last week, the Wildcats fell to 8-11 on the season. The Michigan Tech Huskies are also coming off losses to PNW and Parkside. The Huskies fell to 12-8 on the season after losing 93-89 to the Pride in overtime and 81-67 to the Rangers. MTU is sitting in fifth in the GLIAC with a 7-5 conference record. 

Thursday's tip off against Northern Michigan is set for 6:00 p.m. Saturday's game against Michigan Tech is Sawyers Day and will tip off at 1:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear flannel on Saturday.
