No. 2 GVSU Women’s Basketball on the Road for Final Regular Season Games

Lakers will travel to Wayne State and Saginaw Valley this week

The No. 2 Grand Valley State women's basketball team are back on the road as they travel to the east side of the state for the final week of regular season basketball. The Lakers will play the Wayne State Warriors on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 5:30 p.m. and the Saginaw Valley Cardinals on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1:00 p.m.

The Lakers won their 18th game in a row on Saturday after defeating Northwood in GVSU's final regular season home game. The 70-61 victory extended the Lakers' GLIAC record to 16-1 and overall record to 23-1. Senior Emily Spitzley led the team in Saturday's win, shooting 7-11 from the floor and scoring 17 points for the Lakers. Ellie Droste shot a perfect 6-6 from the free throw and finished with 12 points, followed by senior Hannah Kulas who chipped in another 10 points off of the bench. 

The Warriors are currently second in the GLIAC with a 12-6 GLIAC record and 16-7 overall record. WSU is coming off of their second loss to Michigan Tech on Saturday as the Warriors fell 72-69 in overtime. The first matchup between the Grand Valley State Lakers and the Wayne State Warriors was on Dec. 4 in Allendale, Mich. The Lakers led 47-18 at halftime and defeated WSU 72-35 in GVSU's first conference win of the season. Grand Valley was led by Emily Spitzley who finished with 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals, followed by sophomore Ellie Droste who tallied 13 points. 

GVSU will face the Cardinals in the final regular season game of the year. Saginaw Valley is sitting in fifth in the GLIAC at 10-7 in the conference and 15-9 overall after defeating Michigan Tech 79-70 on Tuesday. The first matchup between the Lakers and Cardinals was Dec. 2, where GVSU fell 51-45 in their only loss this season. This was the first GLIAC matchup of the season and the Lakers shot their lowest percentage of the year in that game, finishing 13-49 (26.5%) from the floor.
