No. 3 GVSU Women’s Basketball Takes Down Northwood Timberwolves

Lakers advance to 16-1 in the GLIAC and 23-1 on the season

GVSU vs. Timberwolves Highlights

The No. 3 Grand Valley State women's basketball team won their 17th game in a row in their 70-61 victory over Northwood on Saturday, Feb. 19. The Lakers extended their GLIAC record to 16-1 and overall record to 23-1. 

The Lakers were able to take the lead early with a 14-5 advantage with just under five minutes left in the first. The Timberwolves responded with a 10-0 run to take the lead 15-14. With 1:30 left, sophomore Rylie Bisballe knocked down a three and GVSU closed the quarter with a 17-15 lead. Despite shooting 27% in the second quarter, the Lakers were starting to pull away and led 28-20 with three minutes left in half. However, NU closed out the half with a 7-0 run and GVSU went into halftime with just a 28-27 advantage going into the third quarter. 

GVSU came out strong in the third as they shot a game-high 71% and outscored the Timberwolves 23-20 in the quarter. The Lakers went into the fourth quarter up four, but struggled to pull away from NU. GVSU was able to extend their lead to six, but the Timberwolves went on a 6-0 in two minutes to bring the game to 58-58 with 4:30 left. The Lakers went on a 12-3 run to close the quarter with seven of the 12 points coming from sophomore Ellie Droste

Senior Emily Spitzley led the team today, shooting 7-11 from the floor and scoring 17 points for the Lakers. Ellie Droste shot a perfect 6-6 from the free throw and finished with 12 points, followed by senior Hannah Kulas who chipped in another 10 points off of the bench. Senior Qay Stanton also led the Lakers with eight rebounds and four assists. 

The Lakers are back in action on the road on Thursday, Feb. 24 at Wayne State. Tip off is set for 5:30.
