Women's Basketball Set To Close Out Nonconference Schedule With New Year's Eve Contest

12.30.2022

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's basketball team is set to close out the 2022 portion of the season with their final nonconference game of the year with a New Year's Eve matchup with Lewis tomorrow afternoon at 1pm.

GVSU enters the game with a perfect 12-0 record, and they come off one of the biggest blowouts in program history, defeating Grace Christian 102-18 Wednesday evening. The win was not the biggest part of the game, as it marked the return of sophomore forward Rylie Bisballe, who wasted little time reminding people why she was a First-Team All-GLIAC performer a season ago, scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds in just 11 minutes of play. Following the victory, the Lakers now rank in the top-10 in the nation in 11 statistical categories, including top-five in nine categories. Thanks to the fifth-ranked scoring offense (85.6 ppg) and the fourth-ranked scoring defense (50.2 ppg), GVSU has the largest scoring margin in the nation at 35.4 points. They are also one of the most efficient shooting teams in the country, shooting 49.9% from the field and 40.8% from three, both of which are in the top-five nationally. A win over the Flyers would give the Lakers a 13-0 record, which would tie for the best start to a season under Mike Williams and would tie for the third best start in program history.

This will be the 25th all-time meeting between these two programs, with Grand Valley holding the edge at 14-9. The Lakers have also won three consecutive matchups, including last year's game which they won 65-60 at Lewis. Rylie Bisballe had a monster game, going off for 22 points and eight rebounds, while Hannah Kulas had 14 points and six boards in the game. The last time Lewis won in the series was in the 2018-19 season, in which they defeated the Lakers 74-66 in Romeoville. That loss was the last regular season nonconference loss GVSU has suffered, as they have won 29 straight nonconference games since then.

Lewis is 6-5 as they head into their final game of 2022 but are 4-1 in GLVC play. After a tough start to the season, the Flyers have won four straight to obtain a winning record, winning three of them by double-digits. Lewis returned their top five scorers from last year's team that went 16-15, and are led once again by Grace Hilber, Kathryn Schmidt, and Taylor Gugliuzza, who are all scoring in double-figures for the second straight season. The experience from the Flyers shows on the court, as they only turn the ball over 11.7 times a game, which ranks third in the entire nation.
