Women's Basketball Wins Seventh Straight To Open Season, With 89-48 Victory Over LSSU

14 Players Scored, Led By Emily Spitzley's 19 Points

SAULT STE. MARIE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's basketball team closed out the opening weekend of the conference play with a convincing 89-48 victory over Lake Superior State. GVSU is now 7-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
 
GVSU opened the game on an 11-4 run, with Emily Spitzley scoring five of the points and Hannah Kulas drilling a triple. LSSU would cut into the lead at 14-9, but Ellie Droste made a layup and free throw, then Kulas made a layup of her own to bring the lead back up, and GVSU led 19-11 after the first quarter.
 
Grand Valley blitzed Lake State to start the second quarter, going on a 17-2 run, as Spitzley hit two more threes and Lexi Plitzuweit hit another to push the lead up to 36-13. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half before Courtney Sharland made a layup with four seconds left to put GV up 45-21 going into the halftime break.
 
Another run started the third quarter for GVSU, as they went on a 15-5 run to extend the lead to 60-26. Ellie Droste and Nicole Kamin would both hit threes and Grand Valley took a comfortable 72-42 lead after three quarters.
 
Sarah Cunningham opened the fourth quarter with her first career basket, as she buried a three-pointer. Abrie Cabana and Nicole Kamin both hit threes as well, and Macy Bisballe made a layup to give her a career-high five points. In the end, Grand Valley tied their season-high with 89 points and had the highest margin of victory of the season with the 41-point win.
 
Grand Valley played 14 players and all 14 of them recorded a point, led by Emily Spitzley's season-high 19. Spitzley was 7-11 from the field and 4-5 from deep, while also grabbing six rebounds. Nicole Kamin tallied 12 points and Ellie Droste had 11 points and three assists. Paige Vanstee and Molly Anderson each pulled down five boards, as Grand Valley outrebounded LSSU 37-25.

Grand Valley returns home for two games next weekend. They kick off on Saturday in a nonconference game against Central State at 1pm, then close out the weekend against Davenport on Sunday at 1pm as well.
