Volleyball Advances To GLIAC Semifinal With Thrilling Win Over Davenport

The Lakers Win In Five Sets To Advance To Play NMU On Friday

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – The postseason had arrived for the Grand Valley women's volleyball team, and the Lakers faced a familiar foe in the GLIAC quarterfinal matchup, taking on crosstown rival Davenport. In a back and forth five set thriller, the Lakers were able to keep their season going, winning 3-2 over the Panthers to advance to Friday's semifinal round.

Set one saw the Panthers jump out to a 10-3 advantage before the Lakers were able to claw back within three at 15-18, but that was as close as they would get as Davenport took set on 25-22. In set two the Lakers got the early lead, going up 7-3, but DU came back to tie it at 19 apiece, and from there the two teams traded points, before a 3-0 scoring run to close the set gave the Lakers a 26-24 win. In set three, the two teams traded scoring runs early, with neither really taking control, but GV used a late 9-2 run to go up 24-17, and they were able to hang on from there, winning 25-20. Set four was all Davenport, as they cruised to a 25-12 win. It looked like that momentum was carrying over to set five for the Panthers, as they went up 6-2, and led 8-5 at the side change halfway through the set. But from that point on, the Lakers turned it on, going on a 10-4 run to close out the match, winning 15-12.

The Panthers could not stop Jordyn Gates tonight, as the freshman tallied 20 kills, 23 assists, and 22 digs, all while swinging at a .447 clip. Kendall Stover added 14 kills and eight digs, while Savannah Thompson had 12 kills. Sarah Wight contributed 13 kills and five blocks, and Rachel Jacquay directed the offense, handing out 32 assists.
