ALLENDALE, MICH. – In their last non-conference contest before GLIAC play starts next week, the Grand Valley women's basketball team scored a season-high 89 points in a route of former conference rival Northwood, winning 89-63 to move to 5-0.
After Northwood got out to a quick 6-4 lead to open the game, GVSU responded with three-pointers from
Hannah Kulas and
Paige Vanstee that started a 10-0 run that saw the Lakers up 14-6 afterwards. The Timberwolves cut it to five points before layups from Kulas and Vanstee once again started a scoring run, this time a 8-2 run to end the quarter with the Lakers up 24-13.
The two teams struggled to score to start the second period, as they combined for six points over the first five minutes of the quarter. The offenses heated up from there, as the Lakers got threes from
Abrie Cabana and
Lexi Plitzuweit to put them up 33-19, then a three from
Nicole Kamin and another from Cabana sparked an 8-3 end of half scoring run to put Grand Valley up 43-28 after 20 minutes of play.
The Lakers pushed the lead above 20 points to open the third quarter after a three-pointer from Plitzuweit and two from
Emily Spitzley forcing a Northwood timeout. The Timberwolves battled back to get within 13 points late in the quarter, but once again the Lakers had an answer as Splitzley scored the final four points of the quarter to give GVSU a 68-51 lead heading into the final quarter.
Northwood cut their deficit back to 14 points to open the fourth quarter, but a 10-0 Laker run got their lead back above 20 and it would never fall below that mark again.
Avery Zeinstra hit her first career three-pointer to highlight the fourth quarter as the Lakers took care of business in the 26-point win.
Six players scored in double-figures this evening led by
Emily Spitzley's 16. She also added a career-high seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals.
Hannah Kulas had 13 points and seven rebounds.
