Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Takes Care Of LSSU In Four Sets

SAULT ST. MARIE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's volleyball team took another trip to the upper peninsula today for a matchup against Lake Superior State. After two close sets to start out, GVSU gained momentum in set three and dominated from that point on, winning the match 3-1.

Neither team could get control during set one until very late, as LSSU used a 4-1 run to go up 24-22, but facing four straight set points, GVSU didn't falter and took all four points to close the game on a 4-0 run and win 26-24. Lake State got out to an early lead in set two and would not relinquish that lead, holding on for a 25-21 victory. LSSU once again started quickly in set three, going up 5-0, but GV was able to respond and battled back to tie it at nine apiece. Lake Superior State held a narrow 16-15 advantage, but then GVSU went on a torrid 10-0 run to end the set, finished off by a Kendall Stover kill. Grand Valley dominated set four, jumping out to a 12-5 lead and never looking back, cruising to a 25-11 victory.

"I thought our kids showed a lot of resiliency today after a tough match Saturday against Ferris. We had to get on the road and drive five hours north, then get ready to compete again. We were a little slow to start the match, but found a way to win the first set, after that Lake State put us under a lot of pressure from their offense," head coach Jason Johnson said. "By set four, I felt our team started wearing down their offense with our block, and our transition offense did a great job of scoring for us."

Kendall Stover led GVSU with 14 kills this afternoon, swinging at a .258 clip and adding seven digs. Jordyn Gates tallied another triple-double, tallying 11 kills, 18 assists, and 10 digs, while also adding six total blocks. Sarah Wight had nine kills and six total blocks. Rachel Jacquay had 21 assists and McKenzie Johnson had 20 digs. As a team, the Lakers recorded 13 blocks and 10 service aces, with Julia Blaney contributing seven of the aces herself.
