No. 6 GVSU Wraps Up Regular Season with Dominate 5-1 Win at Davenport

Lakers finish the regular season with a 12-2-4 record

GRAND RAPIDS – The No. 6 Grand Valley State women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a dominant 5-1 road win against Davenport Friday (Oct. 28) night. The Lakers finish the regular season with a 12-2-4 overall record, 10-1-3 in the GLIAC. Davenport finishes the regular season 4-9-5 overall, 3-7-4 in conference play.

The Lakers got off to a fast start as Kacy Lauer scored her first collegiate goal in the first 38 seconds of the game. Just 39 seconds later, Kacy Lauer made it 2-0 in favor of the Lakers with a header off a great pass by Cate Brown

The Lakers continued to create scoring in the 11' minute. Nina Ferraro hit the post with a shot and the rebound went to Lauer, but her shot was saved by the keeper. Two minutes later, the Lakers found the back of the net again to make it 3-0. Nina Ferraro placed a great lead pass for Taylor Reid to run past the defender and net her ninth goal of the season. Davenport brought it back to a two-goal lead for the Lakers with a goal in the 21' minute. The Lakers went into halftime with a 3-1 lead, leading 8-3 in shots and 3-1 in corner kicks.

Just three minutes into the second half, the Lakers made it 4-1 off a goal in the middle of the box by Kennedy Bearden with the assist by Stephanie Sturgeon. That goal was Bearden's 10th of the season. Six minutes later, Taylor Reid made a great move to her right at the top of the box and fired a shot to the low right of the goal that got past the outstretched keeper to make it 5-1. That goal was Reid's second of the night and 10th of the season.

The Lakers kept creating scoring chances as they would dominate most of the possession the rest of the way and would hang on to the 5-1 win. GVSU dominated with a 17-4 advantage in shot attempts, and 4-1 in corner kicks.

Kacy Lauer had a career night with two goals on eight shots, five on goal for the Lakers. Reid scored two goals on two shots, while Bearden scored a goal on two shots. Brown, Ferraro, Sturgeon, and Mackenzie Jones each dished out an assist. Sophomore Emma Chudik led all Laker field players with 70 minutes played.

The Lakers have already clinched the GLIAC regular season championship and the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament. The Lakers will host the quarterfinal round of the GLIAC Tournament on Tuesday (Nov. 1) against Purdue Northwest at 6:00 PM at the GVSU Soccer Field.
