GVSU Soccer Highlights
ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State women's soccer team blanked Purdue Northwest 7-0 in the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Lakers will host Ferris State in the semifinals on Friday (Nov. 4) at 6:00 PM. The Lakers improved to 13-2-4 on the season, while Purdue Northwest drops to 0-18-1.
The Lakers dominated from start to finish as they outshot the Pride 32-5, 14-2 on goal. The Laker defense did not allow a single Purdue Northwest corner kick.
GVSU got off to a fast start with
Kennedy Bearden putting the Lakers on the board in the 2' minute off a free kick sent into the box by
Cate Brown. Bearden headed it in for her 11
th goal of the season. The Lakers created a couple of scoring chances in the 12' and 13' minutes off shots by
Kennedy Metzger that was saved and sent just wide.
Cate Brown scored her first goal of the season in the 20' minute to make it 2-0 with a strike from just outside the box that hit the post and went in. Just two minutes later, Bearden notched her second of the game and 12
th of the season that made it 3-0 with assists by Metzger and
Ryann Fetty. Freshman
Abby Winn would tack on another first half goal in the 34' minute to make it 4-0 for her second of the season with the assist by
Kacy Lauer. The Lakers went to the break with a 4-0 lead and a 14-3 shot advantage.
In the second half, the Lakers found the back of the net in the 52' minute to make it 5-0.
Taylor Reid scored her 11
th of the season off a great lead pass by
Emma Chudik. The Lakers continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone with shots that were saved by the keeper to keep the score at 5-0.
In the 69' minute,
Riley O'Brien fired a long range shot that just went by the outstretched keeper at the bottom left corner of the goal. That goal was O'Brien's third of the season. The Lakers would add a final goal in the 79' minute that made it 7-0.
Kaylah Joyce placed a great lead pass for
CeCe McCarthy to run it down and fire it in the net for her first collegiate goal.
Kendall Robertson got the start in between the pipes for the Lakers and played 66 minutes making one save.
Alex Jerore saw her first action in net this season and made one save in the combined shutout. Bearden led the Laker attack with two goals on three shots. Reid netted a goal on five shots, while
Sophia Morgan led the Lakers with six shot attempts.
Alexa Morello led all Laker field players with 53 minutes played.
GVSU will host the GLIAC Tournament Semifinal matchups this Friday (Nov. 4) and the Championship match on Sunday (Nov.6). The Lakers will play Ferris State at 6:00 PM in the second semifinals, while Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State will play in the first semifinals at 3:00 PM.
