GVSU Men's Basketball Drops Exhibition at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's basketball team dropped an 85-69 decision against Eastern Michigan in their second exhibition game of the season Thursday night at the George Gervin GameAbove Center.
 
Chinedu Kingsley Okanu led the Lakers with 11 points on 5-10 shooting and grabbed six boards. Freshman Jalen Charity dropped nine points and grabbed five rebounds, while Luke Toliver, Britain Harris, and Austin James each added eight points on the night. Redshirt freshman Trevor Smith led the Lakers with four assists. 
 
The Lakers and Eagles traded a pair of three pointers to begin the game. GVSU went on a 7-0 run at the midway point of the first half to take a 20-13 lead with a bucket by Chinedu Kingsley Okanu, a three by Luke Toliver, and a layup by Trevor Smith. The Eagles responded with a 14-0 run to take a 27-20 lead with under six minutes to go in the half. 
 
The Lakers would respond with a 10-0 run of their own. Toliver scored eight straight points for GVSU to give them a 28-27 lead. A late three by Eastern Michigan gave them the 35-33 lead heading to the break.
 
Toliver led the way for the Lakers in the first half with 11 points on 4-6 shooting, 2-3 from beyond the arc. Carver-Bagley hit a pair of threes, while Smith and Harris dished out two assists.
 
In the second half, Charity started the scoring followed by an Okanu dunk tied off a great pass by Trevon Gunter to tie the game at 37-37. Following a 6-0 run by the Eagles, the Lakers responded with a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead at the 14-minute mark of the second half. Eastern Michigan would respond with an 8-0 run of their own to retake the 52-47 lead. The Lakers would not go away as they were able to cut the deficit to five with five minutes remaining, but the Eagles were able to make a run to close out the game. 
 
The Lakers will play their final exhibition game this Tuesday (Nov. 1) against Michigan State at the Breslin Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
