No. 6 GVSU Secures GLIAC Regular Season Championship with win over Purdue Northwest

Lakers have won 17 consecutive GLIAC Regular Season Championships in the fall season

HAMMOND, Ind. – The No. 6 Grand Valley State women's soccer team shutout Purdue Northwest 2-0 Sunday (Oct. 23) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 11-2-4 on the season, 9-1-3 in GLIAC play, while Purdue Northwest falls to 0-16-1, 0-13 in the GLIAC. The win clinches the Lakers 17th consecutive GLIAC Regular Season Championship in the fall season. 
 
The Lakers dominated the possession and shots. The Lakers got their first shot of the game in the 5' minute by Mackenzie Jones. One minute later, the Lakers drew a penalty in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Brooke Russell made no mistake and gave the Lakers the early lead for her first goal of the season. 
 
GVSU continued to create scoring chances in the first half. In the 24' minute, Taylor Reid got a shot that was blocked, and Chantel Carranza got the rebound but her shot went wide left. Reid got another shot off in the 28' minute, but the keeper was in good position to make the save. The Lakers would go into the half up one leading 7-1 in shots, 4-0 on goal. 
 
The Lakers would create more scoring chances at the start of the second half with a pair of corner kicks in the 48' and 49' minute. In the 53' minute, Kacy Lauer got the first shot of the half that was saved by the keeper to keep the lead at one. Kennedy Bearden sent a shot just wide left in the 54' minute. Alexa Morello extended the Laker lead to 2-0. That goal was Morello's first of the season. The Lakers would not allow Purdue Northwest to get off a shot attempt in the second half and would hang on for the two-goal win.
 
The Lakers dominated in the shots category leading 14-1, 8-0 on goal and had a 5-1 corner kick advantage. Nina Ferraro led the Lakers with three shots, two on goal, while Mackenzie Jones, Taylor Reid, and Chantel Carranza each had two. Jones led all Lakers field players with 82 minutes played. Kendall Robertson got the start in goal for the Lakers and earned her sixth clean sheet of the season.
