Volleyball's Comeback Falls Just Short Versus Northern

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's volleyball team took on Northern Michigan for the Homecoming match. After losing the first two set, the Lakers responded by taking the next two to force a fifth set, where the Wildcats were able to prevail to win the match. The loss drops the Lakers to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in conference play, while NMU moves to 18-6 overall and 10-3 in the GLIAC.
 
The first set was close throughout, as both teams used scoring runs to inch in front of one another. With the score tied at 23, the Wildcats used one of those scoring runs, and took the last two points to win the first set 25-23. NMU jumped out early in set number two, taking an 11-6 lead, and they held on from there, winning 25-19. The Lakers were able to answer in set three, ending the set on a 9-3 run to win the third set 25-19. The Lakers dominated from the opening serve in the fourth set, cruising to a 25-14 win. Set five was back and forth, with the two teams being tied at 12 late in the set, but Northern was able to string together three consecutive points to take it 15-12.
 
Jordyn Gates had another big game, tallying 16 kills, 20 assists, 18 digs, and six total blocks. Kendall Stover also had 16 kills, while also adding 12 digs. Sarah Wight recorded 13 kills and six total blocks, while Rachel Jacquay notched 27 assists. Mattie McCabe came off the bench in the second set and provided a strong performance, tallying six total blocks and two kills.

The Lakers have a short turnaround this weekend, as they travel to Davenport on Tuesday for the Crosstown Showdown at 7pm.
