Volleyball Closes Out The Midwest Region Crossover

Lakers Fall To Findlay In Four Sets

HAMMOND, IND. – The Grand Valley women's volleyball team closed out the Midwest Region Crossover tournament this afternoon with a matchup against Findlay. After four evenly matched sets, including three that went to extra points, GVSU ultimately lost to Findlay 3-1.
 
In set one, the two teams traded points for most of the game, but GV used a 9-1 run to take a 15-10 lead. Findlay was able to battle back however and ended the set on a 6-1 run to take set one 26-24. Set two mirrored the first set, except for this time the Lakers were the ones who ended the set on a 6-1 scoring run and won the set 25-20. Findlay got out to an early lead in set three, going up 13-7 to begin the set, but again GV used a late scoring run and tied it at 25 apiece. However, that was as close as they would get as the Oilers scored the next two points to win 27-25. Set four was a marathon match, featuring 64 total points, wight set points, and 17 times throughout the set that it was tied. After Findlay got a 7-4 lead to open the game, the Lakers battled back and from that point on, neither team was able to get a lead of more than three points for the rest of the match. The Oilers were able to hold off multiple set points by the the Lakers and took the fourth set 33-31 to win the match.
 
Jordyn Gates had another big game, recording 19 kills, 20 assists, and 12 digs, all while swinging at a .405 clip. Kendall Stover tallied 16 kills on a .357 hitting percentage, while Sarah Wight had 13 kills and two blocks. Rachel Jacquay passed out a season-high 42 assists, while Emily Holbrook (17), McKenzie Johnson (16), and Julia Blaney (14) all had fourteen or more digs.
 
Up Next
The Lakers are back in GLIAC play next weekend, as they play Northern Michigan on Friday at 7pm, and Michigan Tech on Saturday at 4pm. Both games will be at home in the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
