GVSU Women’s Basketball Starts 2022 With Win Over Northwood

Lakers are on a six game winning streak

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated the Northwood Timberwolves in a 65-53 victory on the road on Thursday, Jan. 6. The Lakers' six game winning streak brings them to 11-1 on the season and 4-1 in the GLIAC. 

The Lakers were off to a slow start in the first quarter until sophomore Courtney Sharland scored the first basket of the game for GVSU at the 6:30 mark. Trailing by as much as eight points, the Lakers were able to come back and tie it up at 14-14 and finish the first quarter down one. The Lakers scored the first basket of the second quarter and took their first lead of the game (18-17) with nine minutes still left in the first half. The Lakers and Timberwolves scored eight points a piece in the second quarter, giving the Timberwolves a 25-24 advantage heading into the third quarter. Sophomore Ellie Droste led the Lakers in the first half with eight points, shooting 2-2 from behind the arc. 

Despite trailing by as much as nine at one point in the third, the Lakers were able to pull within three. Senior guard, Qay Stanton, knocked down a three pointer for the Lakers with 2:05 left in the third. Her made basket was directly followed by a steal from sophomore Hadley Miller, resulting in a made layup from senior Emily Spitzley. The Lakers led 45-42 heading into the fourth quarter. GVSU started the final quarter with an 11-0 run and outscored the Timberwolves 20-11 in the fourth. 

GVSU shot 47% from the floor, while holding the Timberwolves to just 33%, and won the rebounding battle 36-29. The Lakers were also able to score 34 of their 65 points in the paint. Sophomore Ellie Droste led Grand Valley with 18 points, followed by senior Emily Spitzley and sophomore Rylie Bisballe who also chipped in 13 points a piece. 

The Lakers are back in action on Monday, Jan. 10 at home against the Davenport Panthers. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
