GVSU Defeats Purdue Northwest and Advances to 17-1

A strong second half leads the Lakers to their 12th straight win

The Grand Valley State women's basketball team advanced to 10-1 in the GLIAC and 17-1 on the season after defeating the Purdue Northwest Pride 64-40 on Saturday.

Despite a slower start, GVSU was able to outscore the Pride in the final three quarters. The Lakers struggled offensively in the first quarter and the defensive pressure from PNW forced GVSU to shoot just 4-12 from the floor. The Lakers came out strong in the second as they started the quarter with a 7-0 run and took the lead 20-15. GVSU was able to keep the lead and finished the half 27-26.

The Lakers came out shooting 67% in the third, making 10 baskets on just 15 attempts. GVSU was also able to hold the Pride to their lowest shooting quarter of the game at just 15%. Grand Valley's offensive output combined with their defensive efforts allowed the Lakers to outscore PNW 23-10 in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Lakers only gave up two baskets and outscored the Pride 14-4 for a 64-40 victory over Purdue Northwest.

The Lakers were led by senior Emily Spitzley, who shot 8-9 on the day and finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Senior Hannah Kulas also scored 13 points and grabbed five boards, followed by sophomore Hadley Miller who finished with eight points and two steals.
