The Lakers are back in action this week at home as they host the Parkside Rangers on Thursday, Jan. 27 and the Purdue Northwest Pride on Saturday, Jan. 29. GVSU women's basketball won their 10th straight game last week and are leading the GLIAC at 8-1. Overall, the Lakers are 15-1 and ranked #11 in the nation in the WBCA NCAA DII Top 25 Coaches Poll this week.Â
The Lakers are coming off of a sweep in the U.P. last Thursday and Saturday with wins over defending GLIAC champions Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan. GVSU defeated the Huskies 74-70 in OT on Thursday. The Lakers were led by sophomore Ellie Droste, who finished with 31 points and shot 50% on the night. Senior Emily Spitzley not only hit the three point bucket to send it into OT, but went a perfect 4-4 from the three and finished with 20 points. On Saturday, the Lakers defeated the Northern Michigan Wildcats 61-48 and were led by sophomore Rylie Bisballe, who finished with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Thursday's matchup against the Parkside Rangers is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse arena. This will be the second time facing the Rangers this season as GVSU traveled to Kenosha, Wis. back in early December. The Lakers defeated the Rangers 71-57 on the road and were led by Rylie Bisballe, who finished with her first double-double of the season, scoring 14 points, grabbing 10 boards, and blocking four shots. Parkside is coming off of a 59-57 win over Saginaw Valley on Saturday and are currently sitting in seventh in the GLIAC standings with conference record of 4-5 and overall record of 7-10.Â
Tip off for Saturday's matchup against Purdue Northwest is set for 1:00 p.m. at home. The first matchup between the Lakers and the Pride was in mid-Decemebr where GVSU defeated PNW 73-49. The Lakers' sharp shooting performance was again led by Rylie Bisballe who finished 7-9 on the night and led the Lakers with 14 points and seven rebounds. After losing 60-48 to Wayne State on Saturday, PNW is ninth in the GLIAC with a 2-7 conference record and 5-11 overall record.
