The Laker women's basketball team is on the road this weekend after picking up two wins at home last week against Davenport and Ferris State. GVSU will match up with last season's GLIAC champs, Michigan Tech, on Thursday, Jan. 20 with tip off set for 5:30 p.m. The Lakers will travel to Marquette, Mich. on Saturday, Jan. 22 to then face the Northern Michigan Wildcats. Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
The Lakers are sitting in first place in the GLIAC standings and are second in the conference in blocks per game (4.3) and third in rebounds per game (40.4). The Lakers' scoring defense is first in the country, as GVSU is holding teams to an average of 48.1 points per game. Grand Valley is also ranked #12 in the nation in the WBCA NCAA DII Top 25 Coaches Poll and are #3 in the Midwest Region in NCAA DII D2SIDA Region Polls.
After defeating the Ferris State Bulldogs on Thursday, the Lakers have won eight straight and are 6-1 in GLIAC and 13-1 overall. GVSU took down the Bulldogs 67-59 and were led by senior Emily Spitzley. Spitzley finished with 22 points and shot 4-8 from behind the arc. Sophomore Rylie Bisballe finished with 19 points and eight rebounds, followed by sophomore Ellie Droste who shot 70% from the floor and finished with 17 points.
Thursday's game against the Michigan Tech Huskies will be matchup of the top two teams in the conference. The Huskies are second in the GLIAC with a 5-1 conference record and overall record of 10-4. The Huskies are coming off of a 66-60 win over Wayne State and a 93-76 victory over the Parkside Rangers last week. Last season the Huskies finished first in the GLIAC regular season and won the GLIAC tournament. GVSU fell to MIchigan Tech in both matchups last year, as the Huskies defeated the Lakers 54-52 in game one and 54-44 in game two.
Saturday's matchup is against the Northern Michigan Wildcats, who are eighth in the GLIAC with a 2-3 conference record and overall record of 7-6. NMU is coming off of losses to both Wayne State and Purdue Northwest. The Wildcats fell to the Warriors 71-56 on Saturday and to the PNW Pride 59-56 on Monday. The Wildcats finished sixth in the conference last season and the Lakers defeated NMU last year 61-34 in game one and 58-32 in game two.
