ALLENDALE, Mich. - Four Laker fall sports have received national rankings this week, with men's and women's cross country leading the way in the number one spots, women's soccer is number two and football is number nine. GVSU is the only school in the country, regardless of division, to have four teams ranked in the top 10 of those respective sports. The men's cross country team regained the number one spot after beating division I Michigan State at the Spartan Invitational, while the women remained in the top spot. Women's soccer and football each moved up one spot this week.
The men had four top-10 finishers, with
Tanner Chada and
Isaac Harding finishing second and third, closely behind Michigan State's first-place runner.
Caleb Futter finished eighth, followed by
Jacob Lee in ninth.
The women's team finished second behind Michigan State, with
Hannah Becker from GV being the first division II athlete to cross the line taking seventh. The Lakers have defeated all of their division II competitors so far this season.
The women's soccer team is undefeated with a 6-0 record and 2-0 ledger in conference games. They've recorded five shutouts, outscoring their opponents 20-2 in the early goings. The Lakers have already faced two nationally-ranked teams, shutting out then-No. 24 Findlay, 2-0, at home and then-No. 7 Central Missouri, 3-0, on the road.
Kennedy Bearden leads the Laker attack with five goals and 11 points while
Taylor Reid is tied for the GLIAC lead with four assists. Three-time All-American
Cecilia Steinwascher leads the way defensively and GVSU has taken home the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week award twice in three weeks.
The Laker football team is 2-0 and ranked number nine heading into a non-conference meeting at Michigan Tech Saturday (Sept. 25). GVSU claimed a 34-14 victory over nationally-ranked Colorado State-Pueblo in the opener, followed by a 45-24 win over Wisconsin-Lacrosse last Saturday. GVSU has tallied three conference player of the week awards (QB
Cade Peterson, WR/KR
Juwan Johnson, LB
Abe Swanson) and dominated its first two opponents in all three facets of the game.
