No. 3 women's soccer beats Northwest Missouri State, 5-2, Friday

Lakers improve to 3-0 to start 2021 fall season

Warrensburg, Mo. – The No. 3 Grand Valley State Lakers earned their third straight win to start the season, 5-2, over the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats Friday (Sept. 10) on the campus of the University of Central Missouri. Five different Lakers scored in the win that improved GVSU to 3-0 while Northwest Missorui falls to 2-1 on the year. The Lakers are back in action Sunday (Sept. 12) against the No. 7 UCM Jennies at 2 ET.

The Lakers scored twice in the first half to set the tone. Caitie Baron used an assist from Cecilia Steinwascher in the 33' to pour in her first goal of her senior season to put the Lakers up. It was Baron creating again in the 42' when she was wiped out by the Bearcat keeper to set up a penalty, which Steinwascher would take. The keeper made the initial stop, but Steinwascher was able to put back her own rebound to double the advantage before the half.

The Lakers added to the lead near the hour-mark when birthday girl Taylor Reid had a shot deflected towards Kennedy Bearden, who put home her third goal in as many games. The Bearcats got one back just moments later, but Chantel Carranza responded with her second goal of the season off an assist from Missouri native Mackenzie Jones. Alicia White turned home an assist from Morgan Cochran ten minutes later to round out the Laker scoring.

The Bearcats got a late goal to get back within three, but could get no closer. Callie Rich played 80 minutes in goal and made five stops on eight chances while Allison Fredrick made her Laker debut between the pipes and made one save on two chances. Reigning GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, Cate Brown, led all Laker field players in minutes while all 19 field players that saw action played at least 20 minutes.
