LANSING, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team received an outstanding pitching performance from
Mark Scannell in a 3-0 win over Wayne State in an elimination game at the GLIAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The junior right-handed pitcher threw a complete-game shutout, while only allowing two hits and two walks to advance the Lakers onto the GLIAC Tournament semifinals against Ashland tonight at 6:00 PM. The nine-inning complete game shutout was the first for a GVSU starting pitcher since Kyle Lawson in 2016 vs. Alderson Broaddus.
The Lakers took the lead in the bottom of the second on a RBI triple by
Cade Stanton, scoring
Kyle Nott to go up 1-0. No team would score for the next three innings before
Anthony Cocco lined a double down the line to score Laudont.
Parker Murdie scored on a passed ball in the seventh to give GVSU an insurance run, but Scannell needed just the one run to help the Lakers secure the win.
The winner of tonight's game will play Davenport at 11:00 AM tomorrow and will need to defeat them twice to win the championship.
