No. 15 Softball sweeps Ashland Monday

Lakers take game one, 3-1, and game two, 4-0

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 15 Grand Valley State Lakers swept the Ashland Eagles in a home doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Lakers took game one, 3-1, before a 4-0 win in the finale. The Lakers improve to 18-4 on the season and 9-1 in GLIAC play.

The Lakers did all their scoring in the fourth inning of game one. After back-to-back walks started the inning, Morgan Wagner laced a single back up the middle to plate a run. Joanna Cirrincione followed with a sacrifice fly to left field before Taylor Rieger smashed a double off the fence in right-center.

Hannah Beatus (W, 8-2) went the distance in the circle, allowing just two hits and an unearned run in the seventh inning. She walked one while striking out seven and forced nine groundouts to just four flyouts in a very efficient performance.

The Lakers got on the board in the second inning of game two when Paige Ligocki delivered a two-out single to chase home what would prove to be the winning run. A sacrifice fly by Rieger in the fifth added some insurance before the Lakers tacked on two more in the sixth for good measure.

Genesis Eggart (W, 3-0) was dominant in the circle in the second game, allowing just two hits in a complete-game shutout. She allowed an infield single to start the game but retired the next 16 batters she faced before another single with one out in the sixth. She struck out nine Eagles without issuing a walk, facing just one over the minimum.

The Lakers begin an eight-game road trip Wednesday when they travel to Purdue Northwest to face the Pride. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live coverage while @GVSUSoftball provides live updates on Twitter.
