The Lakers recorded 30 hits across the two games

MIDLAND, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team split with #21 Northwood on Saturday to conclude a four-game series. The Lakers move their record to 9-9 overall and 5-3 in GLIAC play.

Game 1:

Cade Stanton, Carter Smith, and Anthony Cocco each had RBI singles in the first three innings of the game to help the Lakers build a 3-1 lead. Northwood would answer in the third and tie the game at 3-3, before scoring two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. GVSU got one back in the fifth and then scored four runs in the sixth to retake the lead at 8-5. In the bottom half of the sixth, Northwood would answer once again, this time with a grand slam to bring the score to the eventual final of 9-8.

Stanton had a team-high three hits, while Smith, Ryan Blake-Jones, and Christian Faust recorded multi-hit games. RHP Michael Barno was tagged with the loss.

Game 2:

After the tough ending to game one, the Lakers bounced back and jumped on the Timberwolves early, scoring 10 runs in the second inning to take command of the game. Northwood would battle back and cut the deficit to 10-6, but GVSU responded with runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth to fend off the Timberwolves. Nick Shaw earned the win in relief by tossing five innings, allowing just one hit and one run, while striking out five. Starter Ben Thomas pitched four innings and allowed just one earned run.

The Lakers totaled 17 hits and were led by Joe Laudont with four hits and four RBI. Faust and Ryan Lorber each recorded three hits and Cocco and Smith both tallied two hits.
