GVSU Baseball defeats Parkside on Sunday afternoon for series split

The Lakers are slated to play at Davenport next Friday

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Grand Valley State baseball team defeated Parkside, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon in come-from-behind fashion to earn the series split.  The Lakers improve to 11-11 overall and 7-5 in conference play.

Parkside took the momentum from yesterday's 8-5 win and grabbed an early 4-0 lead through three innings of play. The Lakers battled back in the top of the fourth as the rally got started on a Parkside error. Jake Rydquist and Anthony Cocco each drove in runs on RBI singles to cut the deficit to 4-2 before Nathan Logan stepped up a few batters later and cleared the bases with a triple down the line. GVSU scored five runs in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. The Rangers would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch, but the Lakers scored the following inning on a passed ball to regain the lead at 6-5. Logan knocked in another run in the eighth inning to give the Lakers a very important insurance run.

Cade Cintorino received a no-decision, tossing five innings, while allowing eight hits and four runs (one earned). Luke Hargis earned the win as he pitched the sixth inning in relief of Cintorino and Jared Skubic was credited with a well-earned save, throwing the final three innings and allowing just one unearned run.

Carter Smith had a team-high three hits and a stolen base to lead the Lakers, while Logan tallied a career-high four RBI. Rydquist and Cocco each drove in a run and Kyle Nott scored two runs on two walks.

The Lakers will be back in action next weekend at Davenport University to begin a four-game series with the Panthers.
