GVSU Men's Golf Falls To Ferris State, 3-2, In Medal Match Final

04.18.2021

Grand Valley State dropped a 3-2 decision to Ferris State in the GLIAC Championship Medal Match final at Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Gull Lake, Michigan. The Lakers, seeded second in the latest NCAA Regional rankings, will next compete at the NCAA Regional in Kansas City, Missouri at Shoal Creek Golf Course. After 36 holes of stroke play, the GLIAC Championship goes to a "Medal Match" event. Each match is scored by the cumulative number of strokes won by rather than the number of holes won. Up 3 means that the player is up by 3 strokes, not 3 holes. The player up by the most strokes after 18 holes wins the match.

GVSU entered Medal Match play as the top seed after dominating the field in stroke play, recording a GLIAC Championship and GVSU 36-hole record with a 546 (-22).  Ferris State was second (566/-2), Saginaw Valley State (572/+4) third and Ashland (576/+8) fourth. GVSU claimed a 4-0-1 win over Ashland with Charles DeLong winning 2 up, Nick Krueger 8 up, Eric Nunn 1 up, Alex Jordan 2 up and Drew Coble was even after 18 holes.

In the final, DeLong (10 up) and Coble (4 up) each won, while Nunn (4 down), Krueger (2 down) and Jordan (1 down) dropped their matches.
