The No. 17 Grand Valley State softball team split with the Parkside Rangers Sunday (April 11) in their second road doubleheader in as many days. The Lakers won game one, 4-1, before falling 7-2 in the backend. The Lakers are now 23-5 on the season and 14-2 in GLIAC play.
Â
The Lakers wasted little time getting on the board in game one. After loading the bases in the first inning,
Nikoma Holmen drove in a run with a fielder's choice to put GVSU in front.
Megan Koenigshof would loft a blooper into shallow ground in the outfield that was caught, but a tough enough play for the second baseman that
Brooke Henning could score.
Lydia Goble would double the total with a two-run homer in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Â
Genesis Eggart (W, 4-0) was once again outstanding, throwing her second straight two-hitter. She struck out 14 while walking only three and didn't allow a run until a solo homer in the seventh with a healthy, late lead.
Â
Joanna Cirrincione singled home Koenigshof in the third inning of game two to open up the scoring, but Parkside answered with a pair of runs on bases-loaded walks in the home side before Goble would lead off the fourth with a solo blast to even up the game with her second homer of the day.
Â
Parkside would regain the lead with a two-out double in the home fifth. A Cirrincione double led off the sixth and, after a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Holmen smashed a line drive right at the first baseman that was caught to double-off Goble at first and thwart the Laker threat. A grand slam would break things open for the Rangers in the home sixth to force a split.
Ashley Platek (L, 7-3) suffered the loss for the Lakers, allowing five runs, most of which came off the grand slam.

The Lakers finish up their road swing on Wednesday (April 14) when they visit Ferris State. GVSULakers.com will provide links to live coverage while @GVSUSoftball has updates on Twitter.
