No. 8 Lakers defeat Davenport, 15-13, on Senior Day

GVSU improves to 6-1

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 8 Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 15-13 decision over Davenport on Saturday.  GVSU remains undefeated in GLIAC play as they handed Davenport their first loss of the season.

Entering the game as the two highest-scoring offenses in the conference, there were a total of 15 lead changes or ties.  After four back-and-forth goals to start the game, including a pair of nets by Maddy Champagne, the Panthers outscored the Lakers, 5-3, entering the second half.  Molly Bursinger added two goals while Kate DeYoung pitched in one in the first 30 minutes.

GVSU wasted no time erasing their deficit as DeYoung found the back of the net within the first 27 seconds after halftime.  Senior Sophie Conroy erupted in the second half, scoring all four of her goals, while Bursinger led the game from the draw with seven controls.

The Laker defense limited Anna Glynn to just two goals in the second half after netting five to start the game.  Rhys Green led the pack with three caused turnovers and picked up two ground balls.  In the net, Payton Neil grabbed her fifth win of the season with three saved goals.  GVSU stays perfect against Davenport, boasting each of the five wins in the all-time match-up.  The Panthers and Lakers meet again in the final game of the regular season on April 27.

Amanda Barian, Abigail Dengler, Anna Gritter, Green and Paige Gottorf were recognized before the game in a Senior Day celebration.  The five seniors helped GVSU earn the 2018 GLIAC Regular Season Title as they look to reach that feat again this year.

GVSU hits the road for action next weekend as they travel to Northern Michigan for a weekend series with the Wildcats.
