GVSU Volleyball completes sweep of SVSU on Saturday afternoon

The Lakers will return home next Friday (Mar. 12) vs. Davenport

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team moved their win streak to three games after a 3-1 (25-11, 25-15, 22-25, 26-24) win over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers improve to 5-1 overall, while SVSU drops to 0-6.

Setter Rachel Jacquay recorded 36 assists today to bring her weekend total to 93. Lisa Sullivan (12), Abby Graham (11), and Jaelianna Primus (11) each recorded double-digit kills and Primus had a team-high six total blocks. After a big performance yesterday, Ali Thompson transitioned to libero and led the Lakers with 20 digs.

GVSU began the match with a 5-0 lead that set the tone for the first set. The Lakers held leads of 13-3, 18-6, and 21-7 before putting away SVSU at 25-11. The second set was close early, but after a 10-10 tie, GVSU went on a 9-2 run to seize control of the set. The Lakers scored five of the final six points and finished off the set on a Haley Blaney service ace.

GVSU appeared to be in line for a 3-0 sweep, but their 16-10 lead diminished as SVSU would score nine out of the next 10 points to take a 19-17 advantage. The Cardinals would take the third set, 25-22. The Lakers were up big in set four, 21-13, before SVSU clawed back once again and tied the set at 22-22. The Cardinals would grab a 24-23 lead, but the Lakers scored the final three points and a Jayla Wesley kill ended the match.

GVSU will be back home at the Fieldhouse Arena next Friday night (Mar. 12) at 7:00 PM to take on Davenport. The two teams will meet the next day (Mar. 13) at Davenport.
