ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State volleyball team moved their win streak to four games after a 3-1 win (24-26, 25-16, 25-19, 25-21) on Friday night over Davenport. The Lakers improve to 6-1 overall, while Davenport drops to 4-3. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Davenport beginning at 1:00 PM.
Junior
Ali Thompson led the Lakers with 21 kills and had a remarkable .405 attack percentage to go along with 15 digs. Setter
Rachel Jacquay, coming off her GLIAC South Division Player of the Week honor, tallied 45 assists, while
Karlie Kucharczyk recorded 12 kills and
Jaelianna Primus had a team-high eight total blocks. As a team, the Lakers totaled a .233 attack percentage and held the advantage over Davenport in kills (55-42), total blocks (13-5), service aces (12-4), and assists (52-41).
The Lakers led early and most of set one before the Panthers came storming back late. GVSU led 21-16 before Davenport scored seven of the next nine points to tie the set at 23-23. The Panthers scored the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead. GVSU once again jumped out to an early lead at 12-5 in set two. Davenport trimmed the deficit to 14-12, but the Lakers took control of the set at 20-16 and then proceeded to score the final five points of the set on a pair of kills from
Jaelianna Primus.
In set three, both teams grabbed early leads with Davenport holding their final lead of the set at 10-9. The Lakers would go on a 12-3 run to seize control of the set and withstood a late Davenport charge to win set three, 25-19. The Panthers led early once again in set four, but GVSU took a 7-6 lead and did not look back. The Lakers ended the match on a kill from Kucharczyk.
