No. 19 Softball sweeps Ferris State Saturday

Lakers begin GLIAC play 4-0 after home sweep

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The No. 19 Grand Valley State Lakers swept the Ferris State Bulldogs in a doubleheader Saturday (March 27) at the GVSU Softball Field. The Lakers took game one, 6-3, before a 9-6 win in game two.

The Lakers struck first in game one on a two-out single by Morgan Wagner in the opening frame. A Megan Koenigshof two-run single followed in the second and she would later score on a sacrifice fly by Joanna Cirrincione.

Taylor Rieger cleared the fence in center field for her third homer of the year, a solo shot, in the fourth then Koenigshof added another RBI knock in the fifth to round out the offense for the Lakers. Hannah Beatus (W, 5-1) went the distance in the circle, giving up three runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out a season-high twelve Bulldogs.

After Ferris State started game two with a home run in the first, Nikoma Holmen answered with a two-run blast of her own to tie the game. Hollister would bunt her way on, steal second, then score on a swinging bunt to put the Lakers in front in the second. The Bulldogs tied it with a run in the third inning, forcing Ashley Platek in from the bullpen to strand the bases loaded and keep the game level.

Paige Ligocki singled home a go-ahead run in the fourth for what would be the game-winner. Ligocki would play a major role in a four-run sixth, using a two-run single, to help break the game open late. Platek (W, 4-1) went five innings and allowed a pair of hits and two walks with eight strikeouts.

The Lakers travel to Northwood Sunday (March 28) for a doubleheader with the Timberwolves before returning home Tuesday (March 30) to host Wayne State.
