No. 10 GVSU falls to No. 3 UIndy, 9-7, on Sunday

Lakers return to play on Friday

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The No. 10 Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Indianapolis, 9-7, at home on Sunday.  The Lakers' lone loss on the season moves the record to 3-1.

Freshman Maddy Champagne netted the first Laker goal of the game within four minutes of play after back-to-back Greyhound goals.  After one more goal apiece in the following four minutes, the score favored UIndy, 3-2, and would be the closest score of the game until the final 1:30.  Entering halftime, UIndy led 7-3 with Champagne accounting for two goals and Sophie Conroy owning the third.

Champagne scored the lone goal for the first 17 minutes of action in the second half, decreasing the Greyhound lead to three.  Final efforts from Champagne, Molly Bursinger and Kate DeYoung in the final minutes pulled GVSU within one net with 17 seconds remaining.  Christina Sato secured the Greyhound victory with a clock-expiring goal to reach a final decision.

The Laker defense put on a show at the start of the second half, including nine saves by Payton Neil in the net.  Neil would end the game with 13 total saves off of 22 shots on goal.  Olivia Esposito caused three turnovers while Maggie Hammer picked up four ground balls.

The Greyhounds now lead the all-time series between the former conference-foes, 5-4.  GVSU returns to action on Friday (March 26) with a quick road trip to Walsh for a 1 p.m. draw.
