COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 19 Grand Valley State Lakers swept a doubleheader from the Ohio Dominican Panthers, winning 1-0 in eight innings then 4-1, on Saturday (March 20) to improve to 8-2 on the season.
There was no scoring in regulation of the first game as both teams threatened but couldn't push a run across. In the eighth, Goble used a groundout to plate
Megan Koenigshoff and put the Lakers in front. The Panthers would get two on in the home side, but
Hannah Beatus was able to freeze the hitter for a called strike three to end the game and seal the win.
That strikeout was the ninth of the day for Beatus (W, 3-1), who went the distance while scattering four hits and three walks for the complete-game shutout win. She worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning when, after striking out the first two hitters, three straight walks had the Panthers threatening but she got through unscathed and would issue just one more free pass the rest of the day.
The Lakers scored all four of their game two runs in the fourth inning. After an error allowed one run to score, Koenigshoff unloaded the bases with a triple laced in the gap in left-center to give GVSU a cushion. The Panthers would get a run back in the home half but that was all they could muster against
Ashley Platek (W, 2-1) as she threw all seven frames and allowed a run on four hits and three walks while striking out five.
The Lakers are back in action tomorrow as they visit Walsh for a doubleheader beginning at 1PM in the final tune-up before GLIAC play begins this week. Visit GVSULakers.com and follow @GVSUSoftball for live coverage links.
